Katrina’s mood the following morning was grim, and wistful, too, no matter how determined she was. She’d slept badly, and when she eventually did fall asleep, it was with the vow not to be distracted from the job she was there to do. If she focused on that, it might mean the other things didn’t come rushing in on her, causing her grief. In the more rational morning light, that seemed like a ludicrously far-fetched goal, given the people that she was dealing with, although she was going to do her best to get the job done properly, despite their interference.

Nicolas’s statement that it was not over yet echoed through her mind. What did he mean? Was his comment only aimed at Sergio? Or was he referring to their relationship as well? Nicolas had made her feel so alive and so pleasured. She craved more of that, not less. But she couldn’t even begin to entertain the possibility that she would see him again. If he had just been using her to get at Sergio, what use would he have for her now? She’d made it clear she meant to complete the job.

It closed him out, and he’d been annoyed about that; it was written all over his face as he’d left. And Sergio’s attitude made a shudder run down her spine. It wasn’t over yet between the two brothers; Nicolas was right. They had to sort it out between themselves. What she had to do was get her job done and get out.

She showered, dressed, and went down to breakfast. As she descended the stairs, she sensed a brooding, tense atmosphere in the house. Thankfully all was quiet, so she went to the dining room and helped herself to cereal from the selection on the sideboard.

Raimunda appeared and, surprisingly enough, graciously offered Katrina fresh-brewed coffee. A few minutes later, she returned with an omelet that made Katrina’s mouth water just looking at it and freshly toasted bread. Katrina wasn’t sure what to make of Raimunda’s less surly, almost courteous behavior.

“Gracias, Raimunda.” She smiled and nodded. Raimunda nodded back and headed off with purpose. Was she going to report to Nicolas, like Sergio had suggested? Maybe.

That thought made her smile, even though she knew it probably shouldn’t. She ate the delicious omelet, drank her coffee quickly, and prayed that Elaine wouldn’t appear. The last thing she wanted to do was make polite chitchat with her. When no one came to join her, she left, stopping briefly at her room to pick up her phone, then made her way across the landing to the west wing and into the tower.

The office and gallery felt much more tranquil, and she breathed easy. Something about the place made her feel at home: its order; its solid, cared-for feeling. Perhaps it was because here she followed her usual routine, and from that came familiarity, or perhaps it was because she felt closer to the first Señora Teodoro, who Katrina sensed might have been the most normal member of the family.
